How To Register A Domain Name Congratulations! You've decided to register a domain name. This is the 1st step in building a website. I recommend that you read this page entirely before Registering a Domain Name. Choosing a domain name is easy, but you should understand a few concepts or suggestions first. You can register any domain name that you want as long as it is available and no one else owns it. A domain name can also be called a "website name". A domain name always ends in a TLD. Examples of TLD's are ".com, .net, .info, .org, .biz, .tv, .ca, .ws, .us, .de, etc etc etc. Let's say for example that your name was Josh and you owned a landscaping company. Well you might want to register "joshslandcaping", but you need to choose the ending you want. For example you could choose "joshslandscaping.com or joshslandscaping.net or joshslandscaping.biz". The most popular ending is ".com", but many people choose to purchase the other extensions too so that no one else can have their name or take traffic away from them. Don't you think that Google would be upset if someone else had registered Google.net and then put up an adult website? Of course they would. So it is always a good idea to lock up your other extensions or at lease a few of them before someone else does. Sometimes when you search for a domain name, that name may already be taken by someone else. I recommend changing your domain up a little to see what else might be available. For example: josheslandscaping.com or joshslandscapingservice.com.
Selecting The Best Domain Name The reason is because most people do a search for keywords on Google or Yahoo. They may not already know your company name. So having a domain with the right keywords is important. I would also suggest registering a domain name that isn't too long. Make it rememberable. Becareful of using words that most people may not know how to spell. If you live in a particular city and you cater to customers only in your area, then maybe include your city name in the domain name. For example: www.sandiegoYoga.com or www.FLrealestate.com This can also help in your search engine ranking. Other helpful factors to be aware of are: 1) Don't register domain names that are too long 2) Use hyphens if your name is more than 3 words long (unless your name includes 3 short words). A name like booktravel.com doesn't really need a hyphen because it's already readable. However a name like buy-florida-homes-and-land.com looks better than buyfloridahomesandland.com since there are so many words in the name. 3) Protect your name by registering multiple extensions (.net, .org, etc.) 4) Add protected registration if you don't want other people to be able to see who owns your domain. With all the identity problems lately, 3 out 4 people are now adding privacy to their domain registrations. This can also cut down on spam and U.S. junk mail, telemarketers and more. It won't stop all of it, but it can definetely slow it down.
NOTE: Keep in mind that the domain name is not the only factor search engines use to determine your website page rank. They also use content, thickness of your website, meta tag, alt tags, keywords throughout sites, # of lines pointing to you, age of a domain, how long a domain is registered for. All these factors and more help you. Many people choose to register a domain name for only 1 year. Why? I am not sure. I mean if you owned a search engine, wouldn't you want to list websites that are planning on being around a while. If you register a year at a time, then you look like a temporary website. Someone who is trying to be in business. But if you register a domain name for half term or full term (5 or 10 years), then you are looked upon as a legitimate business. Plus the most important factor for a website is the domain name. If you register a domain for a year and then forget to renew it, then someone else could buy it and steal all your hard work. Registering a domain name use to cost $35.00 per year. Ouch!! Why not register it for approx. $10/yr.
